1. Which breast implants are affected by the decision?
The breast implants concerned are pre-filled silicone gel prostheses manufactured by the company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP), for which the Afssaps issued a decision to suspend the marketing and use of pre-filled silicone gel breast implants manufactured by PIP, along with a product recall. Indeed, this company used a different gel from the one that had been declared when the implants were placed on the market.
2. What is the problem with these implants?
Following vigilance reports showing an increase in the number of implant ruptures reported to the Afssaps, an inspection was carried out by the Afssaps at PIP's facilities. The findings from this inspection showed that implants had been filled with a silicone gel different from the one declared by the company when it placed the product on the market. These implants therefore do not comply with current regulations and have not undergone the required evaluation. Testing of this gel is currently being carried out by the Afssaps. The results of this testing will be communicated as soon as they are available.
3. How can I find out if my implant is affected?
Information about the type of breast implant placed is available in the documents (operative report, implant card) provided by the surgeon following your procedure. In the absence of this information, we recommend contacting the surgeon who operated on you.
4. What if I cannot find the contact details of the surgeon who performed my procedure?

5. What should I do if I have one of these implants?
Make an appointment with your doctor or surgeon to be examined so that they can prescribe an appropriate test if needed. Please remember that, in any case, regular follow-up is planned for every woman with breast implants.
6. What are the risks to my health?
At this stage, no complications different from those usually encountered with other breast implants have been identified. However, a higher rate of implant rupture and local inflammatory reactions has been observed.
7. Are these risks serious?
No, but if a rupture of the implant is discovered, regardless of the type of breast implant, it is recommended that it be replaced.
8. What are the symptoms of an implant rupture?
Implant ruptures are most often asymptomatic. They can be detected during a clinical examination, and the healthcare professional can then prescribe additional tests if necessary. This is why it is important to maintain regular follow-up.
9. Should I have my breast implants removed?
Based on expert opinion, nothing currently justifies preventive implant replacement.
10. If I have them removed, can I have new implants placed?
In most cases, replacement with new implants is possible. Your surgeon will explain the conditions under which the procedure should be considered.
