They can appear very early, from childhood or adolescence, as they are not a sign of aging.
\n
What causes blue circles?
\n
The presence of blue circles under the eyes is explained by the relative transparency of the skin on the lower eyelids. The skin is indeed 5 times thinner around the eye contour than on the rest of the body.
\n
Blue circles appear on a highly vascularized area of the face. Among the blood vessels located under the eyes are both veins and arteries. In the veins that carry blood back to the heart, the blood appears bluish because it is depleted of oxygen.
\n
Blue circles are therefore caused by the thinness of the skin, which reveals in transparency the bluish tone of the small blood vessels located under the eye.
\n
What remedies exist for blue circles?
\n
It should be noted that we are not all equal when it comes to blue circles. They will be more or less visible depending on each person's tissue characteristics. The thinner the skin around the eye contour, the more visible blue circles will be.
\n
Nevertheless, a healthy lifestyle can help limit the presence of blue circles. Quality sleep helps \"care for\" the body's vascular network. Since the eye muscles work constantly (up to 15,000 blinks a day), they need plenty of rest. If they don't recover enough, the venous network dilates, which amplifies the presence of blue circles.
\n
Diet alone cannot eliminate under-eye circles, but a balanced diet (low in fat and sugar) is an essential factor in promoting good vascularization throughout the body.
\n
Among the available \"old wives' remedies\", people sometimes mention applying the back of a chilled spoon to the eye contour, placing cool cucumber slices on the eyes, or using a coffee-grounds mask. These remedies can indeed have some effectiveness. The spoon and cucumber-slice techniques rely on the properties of cold, which promotes and boosts blood circulation. In the case of the coffee mask, it is caffeine's draining effect that activates blood circulation.
\n
At the practice, we offer custom-formulated serums (based on an analysis of your skin using research-derived diagnostic tools) that can reduce blue circles through their vasoconstrictive, draining and dermis-restructuring effects.
\n
Brown or pigmented circles
\n
\n
<span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\"\n style=\"position: relative; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 690px; \"\n >\n <span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\"\n style=\"padding-bottom: 97.10982658959539%; position: relative; bottom: 0; left: 0; background-image: url('data:image/jpeg;base64,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'); background-size: cover; display: block;\"\n >\n <img\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-image\"\n alt=\" "Pigmented circles are caused by melanin deposits located under the skin"\"\n title=\"Pigmented circles are caused by melanin deposits located under the skin\"\n src=\"/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/15ec7/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg\"\n srcset=\"/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/9ac50/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 173w,\n/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/8d48c/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 345w,\n/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/15ec7/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 690w,\n/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/af659/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 1035w,\n/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/89b2d/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 1380w,\n/static/7d46d3582aacedd0358925b7181a071d/3acf0/cernes-pigmentaires.jpg 2000w\"\n sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\"\n style=\"width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;vertical-align:middle;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;\"\n loading=\"lazy\"\n />\n
\n
\n
Brown circles are another type of discolored circle, but their causes are completely different from blue circles. Pigmented circles are most often brown, but they can also take on a coloring tending toward yellow or tan.
\n
Brown circles are caused by melanin deposits located under the skin. These deposits are produced by melanocytes, cells essential to our body whose function is to protect our organs from UV rays. Melanin is responsible for the color of our skin, hair and eyes. Melanin is also responsible for our tan.
\n

\n
What causes brown circles?
\n
Brown circles are mainly caused by two factors. On one hand, the thinness of the skin around the lower eye contour quickly reveals an excess presence of melanin in the epidermis. On the other hand, the area around the eye socket is a particularly UV-exposed area and is therefore all the more likely to be colored by melanin (the pigment responsible for tanning).
\n
Brown circles tend to appear more often in patients with darker skin tones (particularly patients from North Africa, the Middle East or Southeast Asia). Hereditary predispositions may also explain the appearance of brown circles.
\n
Remedies to correct pigmented circles:
\n
Since brown circles are caused by the presence of melanin, it is advisable to apply full sun protection to the face during prolonged sun exposure. This isn't a remedy as such, but it can limit the development of brown circles from UV exposure.
\n
Cosmetics offer various types of anti-pigmentation (or depigmenting) creams that can quite effectively reduce brown circles. These act on the superficial part of the excess pigmentation around the eye contour.
\n
At the practice, we offer custom-formulated serums (based on an analysis of your skin using research-derived diagnostic tools) which, through their depigmenting, antioxidant and dermis-restructuring effects, can reduce your under-eye circles.
\n
If brown circles are particularly pronounced, a chemical peel, and specifically a depigmenting peel, can achieve good results in reducing brown circles.
\n
Certain lasers can also help lighten excess coloring, such as our ICON MAX G laser. With lasers, however, the eyelid area near the eye cannot be treated: only the lower part can be treated safely.
\n
> Peel for pigmented circles
\n
Hollow circles
\n
\n
<span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\"\n style=\"position: relative; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 690px; \"\n >\n <span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\"\n style=\"padding-bottom: 90.17341040462428%; position: relative; bottom: 0; left: 0; background-image: url('data:image/jpeg;base64,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'); background-size: cover; display: block;\"\n >\n <img\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-image\"\n alt=\" "Hollow circles are caused by fat and muscle volume loss"\"\n title=\"Hollow circles are caused by fat and muscle volume loss\"\n src=\"/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/15ec7/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg\"\n srcset=\"/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/9ac50/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 173w,\n/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/8d48c/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 345w,\n/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/15ec7/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 690w,\n/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/af659/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 1035w,\n/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/89b2d/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 1380w,\n/static/08a9e76b95689c94226d4797cfa8d793/c58a3/cerne-creux-v-inverse.jpg 1500w\"\n sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\"\n style=\"width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;vertical-align:middle;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;\"\n loading=\"lazy\"\n />\n
\n
\n
Unlike blue circles and pigmented circles, hollow circles are directly caused by the effects of aging on facial tissues.
\n
With age, an inverted V-shaped hollow forms between the orbicularis muscle surrounding the eye and the muscle that elevates the nasal wing. This is naturally an area filled with fat that fills this hollow when we are younger. Sometimes this hollow is present from a young age due to hereditary factors.
\n

\n
A consequence of tissue aging
\n
As we age, the loss of fat and muscle volume around the eyes leads to a loss of volume as well as a downward shift of fatty tissue from the lower eye-socket rim toward the cheekbones. This fat then forms a half-circle groove under the eye, which can be more or less extensive.
\n
The hollow appearance of this groove is reinforced by an optical effect of shadow and light on a hollow area, which darkens the circle.
\n
How are hollow circles treated?
\n
There are two particularly effective techniques for treating hollow circles through volume restoration, offering a natural result.
\n
In the field of aesthetic medicine, injecting a filler such as hyaluronic acid effectively fills the volume deficit in the under-eye area.
\n
Another therapeutic solution falls under cosmetic surgery: under-eye circle lipofilling (also called lipofilling or micro-lipofilling of the under-eye area). This technique involves taking fat cells from the patient, which are then re-injected (referred to as an \"autologous graft\") into the area with the volume deficit.
\n
The cheek lift (or centrofacial lift) can treat both hollow circles (caused by fat loss under the eye and tissue laxity) and puffy circles (caused by the sagging of this fat along with skin laxity). This is a lift of the central third of the face that repositions the cheekbones, lifts the nasolabial fold and treats under-eye circles.
\n
Puffy circles: \"bags under the eyes\"
\n
\n
<span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\"\n style=\"position: relative; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 690px; \"\n >\n <span\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\"\n style=\"padding-bottom: 109.2485549132948%; position: relative; bottom: 0; left: 0; background-image: url('data:image/jpeg;base64,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'); background-size: cover; display: block;\"\n >\n <img\n class=\"gatsby-resp-image-image\"\n alt=\"Puffy circles (or bags under the eyes) are caused by tissue laxity\"\n title=\"Puffy circles are caused by tissue laxity\"\n src=\"/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/15ec7/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg\"\n srcset=\"/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/9ac50/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 173w,\n/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/8d48c/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 345w,\n/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/15ec7/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 690w,\n/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/af659/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 1035w,\n/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/89b2d/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 1380w,\n/static/fa99817796accab5ee7646dd103ad618/3acf0/cernes-pleins-ou-poches.jpg 2000w\"\n sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\"\n style=\"width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;vertical-align:middle;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;\"\n loading=\"lazy\"\n />\n
\n
\n
Causes of puffy circles:
\n
To protect it, the eye is cushioned within a fat pocket: the periorbital fat. With age, this fatty mass can shrink, but also shift due to tissue laxity. In addition, the effect of gravity (ptosis) promotes the downward slide of fat, leading to the formation of bags under the eyes.
\n
This phenomenon can appear fairly early, from age 30, because this area contains fewer supportive fibers than other parts of the body. It should also be considered a highly stressed area (over 15,000 eye blinks per day), which weakens it all the more quickly.
\n
What about morning puffiness?
\n
Puffy circles should not be confused with the swollen bags that can be observed upon waking. The latter are caused by lying down overnight. During the night, the body's water redistributes across the whole body.
\n
Morning puffiness is due to insufficient lymphatic and venous drainage during the night, which is why it is made worse by fatigue, lack of sleep, alcohol and tobacco.
\n
Bags under the eyes that appear overnight spontaneously fade within one to two hours of waking.
\n
How to get rid of bags under the eyes?
\n
While there is no miracle remedy against the fatty bags that form under the eyes with age, their appearance can be limited with a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet (not too rich in sugar or fat), avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and regular physical activity promote healthy tissue aging, particularly of facial tissues, which are especially sensitive to outside aggressions.
\n
Otherwise, only cosmetic eyelid surgery can remove the fatty excess pocket of the lower eyelid. This is referred to as \"lower blepharoplasty\".
\n
There is an effective cosmetic surgery technique for directly treating under-eye circles when they are associated with skin laxity: the cheek lift (or centrofacial lift).
\n
A cheek lift repositions the cheekbones, lifts the nasolabial fold and treats under-eye circles. The cheek lift can treat both hollow circles (caused by fat loss under the eye and tissue laxity) and puffy circles (caused by the sagging of this fat along with skin laxity).
\n
Dr. Kron uses different centrofacial lift (CFL) techniques.
\n
If a lift needs to be performed in the same operative session as lower eyelid surgery, his LVPA facelift technique allows him to treat both without an additional scar, combining it with a CFL.
\n
If the lower eyelid area is the only area of concern, the entire procedure can be performed through an incision placed right along the lashes of the lower eyelid.
