Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection by mesotherapy is an aesthetic medicine technique that improves skin quality by acting on the direct consequences of aging.

Note: This treatment is no longer performed at our practice. Depending on the indication, it has been replaced by combined peel sessions, laser, or Keybody-Skin. These treatments generally offer more significant results than carboxytherapy.

\n

Principle of autologous cell regeneration

\n

Platelet-Rich Plasma injections use the regenerative and healing properties of blood platelets. These have the ability to locally release growth factors, small molecules that act as true messengers to activate the skin's regeneration mechanisms.

\n

Plasma contains factors essential for cell survival, such as nutrients, vitamins, hormones, minerals and proteins. Among the plasma proteins are the molecules essential for coagulation and the formation of a fibrin clot, which serves as a guide for cell migration, differentiation and proliferation.

\n

A Platelet-Rich Plasma injection is a treatment indicated for patients who want rejuvenation and enhancement (\"rejuvenation\") of the skin of the face, décolletage, back and/or hands. It can indeed:

What is PRP?

\n

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a preparation of plasma (the liquid portion of blood) in which platelets (the blood cells responsible for coagulation) have been concentrated. This PRP is used as a source of growth factors, known to play a major role in the process of tissue regeneration.

\n

Injecting PRP into the skin notably stimulates the process of microvascularization and the formation of new collagen fibers, giving the treated surface a younger appearance (smoother fine lines, more even complexion, etc.).

\n

PRP is prepared exclusively from the patient's own blood; it is therefore what is known as an autologous preparation, which avoids the risks of rejection or transmission of infectious diseases. This is generally referred to as Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma injections (or A-PRP).

\n

The medical device used for the entire treatment holds certification of conformity for medical use in Europe and the United States. The medical device prepares Platelet-Rich Plasma from blood, through centrifugation.

\n

What happens during a PRP treatment

\n

The treatment generally takes place over a period of one month and consists of two injections of Platelet-Rich Plasma 21-28 days apart.

\n

At a first visit, a skin quality diagnostic is established using the Visia Complexion Analysis system (for the face), which precisely and objectively analyzes the condition of the skin based on several criteria.

\n

Before the procedure, the area to be treated must be free of makeup and dry. Aspirin should be avoided for the 24 hours preceding the session.

\n

The procedure begins with drawing 8 ml of blood. This is sterilely centrifuged to obtain 4 to 5 ml of PRP.

\n

The PRP obtained is then reinjected over the entire surface of the face, décolletage or back of the hands using the so-called \"mesotherapy layering\" technique (superficial injection of small amounts of PRP into the dermis using a fine needle).

\n

At the next session, treatment continues in the same way.

\n

At the end of the treatment period, 3 months after the last injection, a follow-up visit is scheduled to assess the result and any need for a maintenance treatment.

\n

Maintenance treatments are recommended every 3 to 6 months, then every 6 to 12 months depending on skin quality, age and patient history (significant sun exposure, smoking). Note that these maintenance treatments can be performed using other skin treatment methods (mesotherapy, peel, laser, etc.).

\n

The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis at Dr. Kron's practice, in 1 to 3 sessions, spaced about a month apart, under contact anesthesia with EMLA cream.

\n

Recovery and contraindications

\n

Recovery after a Platelet-Rich Plasma injection is generally simple.

\n

A painful sensation may be felt during the pricks. This varies by patient. A moisturizing, soothing cream is systematically prescribed and applied after the session and should be applied for 48 hours.

\n

The treated area is generally marked by papules, which usually disappear within 3 to 12 hours. A few small bruises may sometimes be present at certain injection points.

\n

Possible complications

\n

Since the PRP obtained comes from the patient's own blood, the risk of side effects is minimized, and so far, only mild inflammatory reactions with edema and redness have occasionally been observed in the hours following the injection. These gradually disappear in the days that follow.

\n

Bothersome reactions can occur with certain medications (isotretinoin, Roaccutane). To avoid any risk, ongoing or newly started medication treatments during the treatment period must be reported.

\n

In addition, discomfort related to the blood draw, such as bruising, may occur.

\n

Contraindications to PRP treatment:

\n

The use of PRP is contraindicated in patients with skin lesions potentially caused by abnormal cell proliferation processes. In case of doubt, your practitioner should perform a prior diagnostic. The same applies if you have a blood disorder (such as thrombocytopenia) or an autoimmune disease.

\n

As with all other subcutaneous injection treatments, taking antiplatelet medication (aspirin, Kardegic) concurrently with the injection is contraindicated.

\n

The procedure is also contraindicated when taking medications that increase light sensitivity or that contain beta-carotene, such as certain antibiotics or antidepressants.

\n

Since the effects of Platelet-Rich Plasma on a fetus are not known, women participating in the treatment must use a reliable method of contraception throughout the treatment period. Patients who discover they are pregnant during treatment must immediately inform the doctor and must then be excluded from the treatment protocol as a matter of principle. Breastfeeding women also cannot participate in the treatment.
