This is a complex condition that can have many causes and manifest differently depending on the patient.
\n
A consultation with a specialist helps identify the causes of the headaches and consider a preventive migraine treatment.
\n
Dr. Cédric Kron notably performs preventive treatment of headaches of nasal origin by correcting deviations of the nasal septum (septoplasty). If the migraines are not of nasal origin, a Botox injection is another option for preventively treating migraines.
\n
1. Principle of a preventive migraine treatment with septoplasty
\n
In the case of headaches of nasal origin, a deviation of the nasal septum can be the cause of migraines. Reconstructive surgery such as septoplasty can then prevent cranio-facial pain of sinus origin (this pain results from mucosal contact between the turbinates and the nasal septum, triggering the release of neurotransmitters that cause pain).
\n
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine the sinus areas to determine whether septal deviation is indeed the cause of the headaches. A naso-sinus endoscopy and a CT scan may also be performed to check for inflammatory conditions or structural abnormalities.
\n
This pain is believed to be linked to mucosal contact between the nasal septum and the turbinates, causing the release of substance P, which triggers this pain.
\n
Principle of a septoplasty:
\n
A septoplasty is a nose reconstructive surgery procedure aimed at correcting a deviation of the nasal septum.
\n
This procedure is intended for men and women who suffer from the consequences of a deviated nasal septum. Besides treating nasal headaches, a septoplasty can treat the obstruction responsible for breathing difficulty and sinus and ear infections, and in some cases, an unsightly deformity of the nose.
\n
Septoplasty is a functional surgery that may be covered by health insurance. (If a cosmetic procedure is performed in addition, such as removing a hump, that part will not be covered by the CPAM.)
\n
The procedure involves reshaping or partially removing the deformed parts of the nasal septum responsible for the obstruction.
\n
Two types of incisions may be used depending on the patient's original anatomy:
\n
\n
endonasal (the scar is hidden inside the nose)
\n
at the base of the nose for more complex deviations (external approach incision).
\n
\n
Dr. Kron uses endonasal-only scars in over 95% of cases.
\n
Once the nasal septum is freed from its mucosal and skin attachments, the surgeon partially removes and reshapes the deformed parts of the septum.
\n
The procedure ends with sutures, then, in some cases, the placement of splints on each side of the septum and 2 packs to limit post-operative bleeding and edema.
\n
In case of a strongly deviated nose, a septoplasty may be combined with surgical rhinoplasty: this is referred to as rhinoseptoplasty.
\n
A septoplasty takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes.
\n
The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.
\n
2. Recovery after a migraine treatment with septoplasty
\n
Recovery after a septoplasty is generally simple. This is a procedure with little pain. Post-operative discomfort is mainly related to wearing the nasal splint and packing. The nasal splint is kept on for about a week, while the packing is removed the evening of or the day after the procedure.
\n
Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications in any type of surgery. Stopping smoking 6-8 weeks before the procedure eliminates this additional risk. If you smoke, talk to your doctor, surgeon and anesthesiologist, or call a smoking cessation helpline to help reduce risks and give yourself the best chances.
\n
Brief discomfort may occur but can be limited with appropriate medication aimed mainly at reducing the edema reaction.
\n
During the first few weeks following the procedure, bruising appears and the nose remains swollen, which can cause some breathing difficulty. The duration of this varies considerably from patient to patient. In the case of an external approach, the nose will be swollen for 15 days before returning to its original shape.
\n
For most patients, the nose regains a fully satisfactory appearance 10 days after the procedure. The result on breathing and on the occurrence of headaches can be assessed starting from the 3rd post-operative week, sometimes sooner.
\n
Normal life can resume in the days following the procedure. During the first month, sports activities should be reduced. Afterward, normal sports activity can resume, although sports involving risk of impact to the nose should be avoided (as for anyone, the nose is fragile in everyone).
\n
Sun exposure is possible as soon as the bruising has disappeared.
","frontmatter":{"path":"/en/nose/migraine-septoplasty/","pathFr":"/nez/migraine-nasale/","title":"Treating migraines with septoplasty","tags":["nose","reconstructive surgery"],"about":"the surgical treatment of migraines","pageTemplate":null,"metaTitle":"Treating migraines with septoplasty | Dr Cédric Kron","metaDescription":"A septoplasty is a nose surgery that preventively treats migraines of nasal origin, headaches and head pain by correcting deviations of the nasal septum.","image":{"absolutePath":"/Users/henri/Desktop/git/DrKron/src/images/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg","childImageSharp":{"resize":{"src":"/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/9d169/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg"},"fluid":{"tracedSVG":"data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%20width='400'%20height='226'%20viewBox='0%200%20400%20226'%20preserveAspectRatio='none'%3e%3cpath%20d='M178%2034c-17%204-34%2021-42%2042-11%2027-23%2050-30%2055l-15%206-16%207c-8%204-19%2018-21%2026l-1%205v1l-2%2010-1%209%201%204c0%207%202%208%202%201l2-7%202-6%203-9c1%200%201%206-1%2012%200%202%200%202%201%201l2-6c3-24%204-27%2013-32%209-6%2014-5%2026%203l17%2017c0%201-4%200-7-2l-4-2-14-6-10-2%204%202%2018%209%208%205c3%202%205%203%204%204l1%202h2l2%201c2%203%203%204%201%203l-1%202v2c-3%201-2%203%201%203%204%201%204%203%200%203-3%200-4%202-2%202h7c0%202-4%203-9%201-2%200-2-1-1-4v-4h-3c-3%200-5-1-7-3l-3-3-1%203c0%203-1%204-2%204-2%200-3%202-2%203v2l1%202%201%205%201%204v-4c0-5%201-5%205-2l5%201v1h23l5%205%204%206%201%201%201%202%201%201c1%200%202%201%202%203%201%203%201%203%209%203%206%200%207%200%207-2v-9c2-8%202-21%201-21l-1-2-1-9c-1-7-1-7%202-14l4-8%201-1%202-2%204-20c0-3%201-6%203-7l3-7c0-2%202-4%203-5%202-1%202-1%202%201l-2%203-1%202v6c1%201%205-2%204-3l1-1%201-1c3-7%2014-19%2017-18h2l1-1-2%204-6%2010-5%207c-1%201-2%204%200%204l9-12%209-12%2011-6c2%201%201%204%200%204-2%200-8%205-9%209-2%204-1%204%202%201%201-2%202-2%203-1l3-3%205-5%203-2h2v2c-1%201-4%205-6%2012l-6%2011-5%208-5%208c-15%2019-16%2021-6%2038l4%206%201-4%203-4%208-14c8-15%209-22%2011-41%200-7%202-14%203-18%203-8%203-10%201-22-2-11-6-20-12-31l-7-10c-2-4-4-5-9-6l-6-2-3-2-1-1c1-2-17-2-24-1m12%20135v11l2%2018%203%2020%201%208h27l-3-4a72%2072%200%2001-14-19%201384%201384%200%2000-10-25c2-1-1-7-3-7l-2-2h-1M87%20212c0%204-3%206-4%202l-1-2-2%202-1%202v1c1%201%201%201-1%201s-8%205-8%207l10%201c10%200%2011-1%209-3-3-2-2-4%204-7l8-4c1-2%201-4-1-4l-1%201c1%201-1%203-6%204-5%202-7%202-2%200l4-2-4%201c-3%200-4-1-2-2v-1c-2-1-2%200-2%203'%20fill='%23d3d3d3'%20fill-rule='evenodd'/%3e%3c/svg%3e","aspectRatio":1.762962962962963,"src":"/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/56047/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg","srcSet":"/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/cd83f/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 238w,\n/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/a473f/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 476w,\n/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/56047/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 952w,\n/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/b1862/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 1428w,\n/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/9f7ff/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 1904w,\n/static/e5c997625368c5c4f4e6b76f13817654/d1f66/traitement-de-la-migraine-septoplastie.jpg 3755w","sizes":"(max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px"}}}}}},"pageContext":{}},"staticQueryHashes":["1287509717","2030183111","2938329899","2966912341","3075998988"]}
